It is that time again, the start of a new semester, with new classes and new teachers. How many times have students taken a required class, with a professor that is not quite the favorite? A teacher that does not really teach the material, then decides to give an unbelievably amount of homework, which the students end up teaching themselves.
California State Universities, and Community Colleges students can now go on the website RateMyProfessor.Com and see what their future teachers are all about, according to other students. This site allows students to post their feelings about their previous teacher, whether they enjoyed the class or not.
In order to post reviews and have complete access to the site, the students must create an account. This requires a user name that does not have any part of their real name. The students have a choice to rate the professor with a "Good Quality", "Average Quality", or "Poor Quality". Then on a scale from one to five, rate the professor on easiness, helpfulness, clarity, and overall rating. Lastly, to top off the quality of the teacher, the students can post a red chili pepper, which is a symbol that is used to declare if the teacher is "hot".
Claudia Vizcaino, 22, from Cypress College says, "For every professor I have taken, I have always looked at Rate My Professor.com first." Students may be curious, and nervous as to what their future professor is like. Trisha Parker, 25 says, "I always base what professor I will soon take on the ratings the teacher gets on the site."
Many teachers have admitted that they know about the site, and have looked at their reviews. Many students do not hold their feelings back. There are over 6,000 schools, over 770,000 professors to rate, and over 5,700,000 ratings posted.
Now, there is a certain consideration that students should be aware of. Are these students that posted these reviews being critical or constructive? It is only normal for a student to post bad reviews about a professor if the student received a failing grade in the class.
Makana Nova, 23, a Graduate student from UCI says, "I have used Rate My Professor. com from when I first came to UCI to complete my Undergraduate to now being in the process of completing my Graduate Studies. It is just so helpful!"
